Overview

Atlantic City is the most famous American casino gambling destination outside of Las Vegas, and with good reason. Not only is it the second most popular gambling hotspot in the U.S. (behind Las Vegas), but its beachfront setting within the most populous region of the United States gives it a very desirable location. With about a dozen high-rise resorts and the country's first oceanside Boardwalk (with a capital 'B'), it attracts thousands of people every day, and over 30 million people each year. The original version of the Parker Brothers' classic game, Monopoly, was influenced by its street names, and the annual Miss America pageant was held here for over 80 years. Like Las Vegas, it offers visitors the possibility to win big at slots or blackjack, stay in high-quality suites, and rub elbows with the rich and famous.

Of course, however, Las Vegas it is not. Though its beachfront location is far superior to the desert oasis out west, Atlantic City's limited choices for non-gambling entertainment have given the city a more pessimistic aura since gambling was legalized (to combat decades of declining tourism) in 1976. However, even the most cynical Atlantic City critics and tourists alike have seen drastic improvements in the past several years: the luxurious Borgata resort, Atlantic City Outlets, The Quarter at Tropicana, and The Pier Shops at Caesars are all contributing to this new wave of tourist improvements.

Atlantic City is an old city that has seen the greatest ups and the most devastating downs. Today, it is fast, fast becoming the vacation destination it used to be during its glorious heyday at the turn of the 20th century. Every moment seems to bring about a new and wonderful change, drawing more tourists, and making the city more diverse and an even better place to vacation. It is still not Las Vegas, but the future looks very bright, indeed.
