In the September/October 2009 issue of South Dakota Magazine, Author Jay Kirschenmann was interviewed about his recent work on his book, Black Hills: A Guide to South Dakota’s Classic American Frontier.

“The book has been a long work in progress for Kirschenmann,” the article says, “It’s the culmination of a lifetime of vacations the Hills.”

Kirschenmann commented on his family’s involvement. “My kids tested me on trips out there,” he is quoted as saying. “‘Is [a particular attraction] in there?’ they would ask, so I would flip to the the index and find it. We made a game out of it.”

The article describes how the book “covers the region from Spearfish to Hot Springs.” It also describes how the book is organized by location (as opposed to by type of attraction), which is different than most Black Hills travel books.
