“The book has been a long work in progress for Kirschenmann,” the article says, “It’s the culmination of a lifetime of vacations the Hills.”
Kirschenmann commented on his family’s involvement. “My kids tested me on trips out there,” he is quoted as saying. “‘Is [a particular attraction] in there?’ they would ask, so I would flip to the the index and find it. We made a game out of it.”
The article describes how the book “covers the region from Spearfish to Hot Springs.” It also describes how the book is organized by location (as opposed to by type of attraction), which is different than most Black Hills travel books.
Staff writer Marci Singer writes that Lively’s new guidebook “includes information ranging from the unique geology and geography of the Straits to the best pastie spots in town.”
In the article, author Donna Lively discusses here passion for the Mackinac area. “So much of recent history has been determined by the events that happened here [in Mackinac],” Lively is quoted as staying. “In my heart, I would like all readers to understand and take pride in the special place that the Mackinac region holds.”
Lively further explains that a world without Mackinac, due to the region’s important place in history, “would be a different place.” The region holds a special fascination for her.
The guidebook includes basic travel information, maps, reviews of attractions, and fun facts to help plan a wide variety of vacations to this unique spot where Lake Michigan meets Lake Huron.
Mackinac is available online and in bookstores. The full article as seen in the Petoskey News-Review can be viewed online via the following website:

Clinton Daily News reviews Kirschenmann’s Black Hills book
In the Books Are My Bag section of the paper, columnist Dee Ann Ray provides some insight into Kirschenmann’s book. The guide is part of the Tourist Town Guides series, which, as Ray points out, “is very well done.”
Ray describes some of the research that went into the book: “[Kirschenmann] and his wife went all over South Dakota checking out tourist attractions, accommodations, restaurants, and much more.” She then describes the book as being “divided into quadrants of the state… [making it] possible to plan stops in an organized manner.”
“There is good indexing and even a price guide to accommodations and restaurants,” Ray continues. “Kirschenmann’s book is a great addition to a traveling library or car book shelf.”
The review first appeared in the Clinton Daily News on July 2, 2009.
